DO YOU REMEMBER?
In 1982, the U.S. Border Patrol set up a roadblock at the entrance to the Florida Keys.
Upset by being portrayed as non-U.S. citizens, and devastated by the loss of tourism revenue, the citizens of Key West, led by Mayor Dennis Wardlow, went to Federal Court in Miami, to seek an injunction against the blockade.
They were denied.
Emerging from the Miami courthouse, Mayor Wardlow announced that at noon the following day, Key West would secede from the Union and become a separate nation called:
“If they’re going to treat us like a foreign nation, then we’ll become one,” he said.
What happened next is an amazing story of leadership, courage, humor in the face of adversity, and how a few renegades can make a big difference.
